Hot Summer in the European skies – Interview of the BeCA President, Cpt Alain Vanalderweireldt

The BeCA President, Cpt Alain Vanalderweireldt, has been interviewed in “La Libre Belgique” of 16/06/2023 regarding the latest EASA safety bulletin “Possible Risks Emerging During Summer 2023”.

Between the expected strikes by French air traffic controllers and NATO exercises, the Summer is going to be a hot one in the European skies.

EASA expects significant travel disruptions due to lack of sufficient:

  • qualified personnel
  • aircraft
  • spare parts
  • system capacity

Many flights will be delayed or cancelled.

The BeCA president warns “In some companies, the pressure on crews is likely to be huge”.

Commercial pressure poses a potential risk to safety by increasing fatigue levels and leading to shortcuts in internal procedures.

EASA warns against pilot & cabin crew fatigue and encourages to report safety occurrences.

Airlines & airports will therefore have to put in extra efforts to manage the risks.
