Flight Time Limitations

Flight and Duty Time Limitations (FTL) are necessary to ensure that pilot fatigue does not endanger flight safety. Since the 1944 Chicago Convention, it is recognised that pilot fatigue (due to long duty hours, insufficient rest/sleep opportunities etc.) can pose a risk to the safety of air operations. With the increasing pressure that modern airline practices and competition put on pilots and crewmembers, pilot fatigue has become more and more important. The European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) is now the authority in charge of regulating flight and duty time rules.

BeCA has therefore been actively involved within our European structure, the European Cockpit Association, in order to ensure that this new legislation does not compromise aviation safety. At national level, it is BeCA’s duty to ensure proper translation of these rules into national laws and proper use of these new tools by the airlines. BeCA experts are therefore consulted by the Belgian Civil Aviation Authority and participate actively at company level in the design and implementation of sound and safe Fatigue Risk Management Systems.
